How to create a 301 redirect for apache

How to Apply 301 Redirects With Apache

If you have hosted a site under a sub-directory rather than in a domain of its own, and you want to move your site to the domain and its own dedicated server, accessible as its own domain rather than as a sub-directory, this is possible. In order to have your visitors redirected to the domain from the sub-directory, the redirection must accommodate several file and folder name changes. This can be done with 301 redirects in order to be search engine friendly and to ensure compatibility across all web browsers. It can also be used to forward for aesthetic purposes and also to avoid a 301 sabotage.

Steps

  1. Add 301 redirects to the PHP code that powers SEOmoz.org using PHP’s function. This is the simplest method. Utilizing the power of the apache module mod_rewrite, however, you can match specific patterns for entire folders and redirect them to their new URLs without having to go through every PHP script. Pages with static HTML will mean that it is not practical to use javascript or META tags for redirection.
  2. Install. If your web server does not have mod_rewrite installed, read over the apache documentation for installing modules. It will usually require you to recompile apache with the option –enable-module=rewrite or --enable-module=most.
  3. If your hosting services does not support mod_rewrite, urge your systems administrator to have it installed. Most apache installations will have mod_rewrite installed by default. For example, if a server is running FreeBSD, a mod_rewrite is included by default when installing from the ports collection. Once it is installed, you can verify it is working by adding this line to your apache configuration file or your .htaccess file:
    • RewriteEngine On
  4. Use Apache's Rewrite rule directive:In your .htaccess file, add a line such as ...

RewriteRule ^example/old.html$ http://example.com/example/new.html [R=301,NC,L]

The R=301 indicates a 301 redirect from old.html to new.html page.

  • Context: The mod_rewrite module operates in per-server context or in per-directory context. The per-server context requires you to edit the apache configuration file, httpd.conf , while the per-directory context uses .htaccess files that exist in each folder you want to configure. If you do not have access to httpd.conf, you will have to use .htaccess files.
