This easy but ridiculously tasty birthday mug cake is a great recipe to whip up if you're in the mood for something sweet but simple on your birthday. After just a minute of cooking time, you can make a fluffy, moist cake filled with colorful sprinkles.

Ingredients

Basic Birthday Mug Cake

  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) butter
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 ml) baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) rainbow sprinkles

Egg-Free Birthday Mug Cake

  • ¼ cup (60 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) granulated sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 ml) baking powder
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 ml) pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ tablespoons (22.5 ml) canola or vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) rainbow sprinkles

Steps

Basic Birthday Mug Cake

  1. Microwave the butter in a large, microwave-safe mug.Melt it for about 30-45 seconds until it turns into a liquid.
  2. Add the flour, egg, sugar, milk, vanilla, and baking powder.Whisk gently with a fork until the ingredients have fully incorporated.
  3. Pour in the sprinkles.Mix once more until well-combined into the batter.
  4. Microwave the mug cake for about 60-90 seconds.The top of the cake should be dry and will begin pulling apart once it has fully cooked.
  5. Cool the mug cake for about a minute or so.
  6. Serve.Garnish the mug cake with ice cream, whipped cream, or extra sprinkles. Enjoy!

Egg-Free Birthday Mug Cake

  1. Combine the dry ingredients together into a microwave-safe mug.Whisk the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder gently.
  2. Form a small well and add the wet ingredients.Pour the milk, vanilla, and oil into the mug. Gently whisk with a fork.
  3. Add the rainbow sprinkles and stir once more.
