This Diet Could Protect You From Getting Alzheimer's Disease

The MIND diet combines the Mediterranean diet with the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Scientists first pondered the connection to diet when they realized that rates of Alzheimer's were low in countries like Japan and Italy, where people eat lots of fish, fruits, and vegetables. Of course, Alzheimer's is complex and has many causes, including genetics, but diet does play a role, according to the new study.

Researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago recruited 923 participants, ranging from 58 to 98 years old, and tracked what they were eating for 10 years. They found that people who kept a diet similar to the MIND diet lowered their risk of Alzheimer's by 53%, and had slower cognitive decline in general. And even just casually following the diet helped a little.
