Was The Black Dress Code At The Golden Globes ‘Totally Meaningless’?

This weekend saw a host of famous faces hit the red carpet to celebrate one of the biggest awards ceremonies of the year, the Golden Globes.

The likes of Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep, and Catherine Zeta-Jones all posed for the cameras ahead of the annual awards celebrations – but of course, there was one poignant similarity between all of the celebrities outfits for the big bash.

Almost all attendees at the Golden Globes chose to wear black, in order to stand in solidarity with women who had suffered from abuse or sexual harassment, following the revelation of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

The move was made in association with the Time’s Up campaign, aiming to show predatory men that they can no longer get away with unreasonable behaviour, as they may have done in the past.

But now, some UK TV stars have criticised the move by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, claiming that the gesture was actually, “totally meaningless”.

The panellist ofLoose Womendiscussed the news, and Jane Moore certainly didn’t hold back when expressing her views, criticising the movement for not actually doing anything.

She said, “Sexual harassment has been happening all over the world and suddenly it’s happened in Hollywood and they all wear a black frock?

“What does wearing a black dress do?”

However, fellow panellist Stacey Solomon appeared to disagree, claiming that it was a choice they made in order to do something positive.

She stated, “The whole point is that women have a choice and can stand up and do what they want to do.”

But host Ruth Langsford appeared to echo Jane’s sentiments, suggesting it was “easy” to turn up at an awards ceremony in a “black frock”.

And it seems others on social media may have agreed with Jane’s sentiments, with some claiming it’s “not enough”.

One wrote, It’s ridiculous wearing black to an awards show. It’s not enough. Boycott the entire season by NOT attending any awards events. Sexual assault doesn’t recognize your dress color. #GoldenGlobes

Another said, “Real change starts with action not a dress!”

Others criticised actors and actresses choices to wear black whilst refusing to criticise people like Woody Allen, who have previously been accused of sexual assault himself.

One Twitter user wrote, “How do you wear black and support Times Up but can’t denounce Woody Allen?”

Rose McGowan, the actress who made the original accusation against Harvey Weinstein, also accused the celebrities of “Hollywood fakery”, over the idea of wearing black.

Over Twitter, she said, “And not one of those fancy people wearing black to honour our rapes would have lifted a finger had it not been so.

“I have no time for Hollywood fakery.”

However, many applauded the actors and actresses choice to wear black, suggesting that it was an inspiring move to show their support to victims of sexual assault.
