Another birthday in our household… my eldest son hit double digits this week! He has a love of sharks and young business woman photo for some strange reason is desperate to do a swim with sharks one day! I thought a shark cake would be very appropriate for him. When I searched for ideas on how to make the cake, there were some amazing creations, but with blood and body parts coming out of the mouth of the shark… not what I had in mind to make for my 10 year old!  This is the first cake I have made where I needed to actually draw a template on paper to the exact size so I had something to copy before I even began.

I have included a photo of the cake before I iced it so you can see how I assembled it. I made a square and small round cake with the mixture and basically cut the cake into lots of pieces to make it fit the template I had drawn up. Then assembled with butter cream icing to hold it all together.

I used the Caramel Mud Cake recipe and. I used natural Hopper blue food colouring with a little bit of carob powder to achieve a grey blue colour. The left over icing I used for the cup cakes. The eyes and teeth are white  and the dark part of the eye is Carob fondant, the same as the fins.

I also made 30 cup cakes with little shark fins made out of carob  for my son to take to school to share with his class mates.  The cup cakes were made using the too easy choc cake recipe from the Thermomix EDC and I substituted the cocoa powder for brown sugar to make quick and easy caramel cup cakes. I attempted to pipe the icing to make it sort of look like ocean waves.  For the ones with white icing I crushed some blue hooper sprinkles with a mortar and pestle and sprinkled it over the top.

The carob fondant was rolled out and with another template I made from paper I cut out the fin shapes with a knife. I left them to rest for a few hours on a tray to go firm before placing on the cup cakes.
